Review: 2016 Chevrolet Silverado

2016-Chevrolet-Silverado

New for 2016

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado is a beautifully updated version of the original 2014 model that offers a new face and some exciting new features.

A Pickup Truck With Power

The pickup market has gotten pretty fancy these days, but Chevrolet is sticking to its guns, and that’s a good thing when it comes to trucking. Its new Silverado is a squared-off, steel-bodied beauty that handles exquisitely on the road. It pairs brawn with brains in typical Chevrolet fashion to deliver a dependable, long-lasting, full-size pickup that offers plenty of power.

Chevrolet wanted to keep the essential elements of the popular Silverado in place while still finding ways to give it a bold new look and more technical functionality. The result is a muscular, high-strength truck with rugged capability and an even more delightful driving experience.

Powertrains and Performance

The Silverado is powered by either a 4.3-liter V-6 or a 5.3-liter or 6.2-liter V-8 engine. The 6.2-liter produces 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque along with a towing capacity of 12,000 pounds. It is the fifth generation of Chevrolet’s small block engines, and it features three different fuel-saving technologies: active fuel management, direct injection and continuously variable valve timing.

With a Max trailering package, this truck is the perfect choice for hauling. In addition to the heavy loads it can handle, it also features an integrated brake controller and the option to switch over to tow/haul mode. For hauling tractor trailers, the customized StabiliTrak offers total trailer sway control so you can focus on the road with confidence.

The eight-speed engine has a wide ratio spread and quick-shift capacity that allows for quick acceleration at low engine speeds, which saves money on gas. The three trim levels allow you to choose how much engine power you want in a truck.

As for fuel economy, the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado earns EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway,* which is pretty impressive for a truck this size. It holds a fuel capacity of 26 gallons so you won’t have to worry about fueling up as often on those long road trips.

The Silverado drives more like a sports car than a truck. It features front independent suspension and a stabilizer bar that help it handle smoothly in all sorts of driving situations.

Features and Trims

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado starts at $26,895,** and is available as a two- or four-door truck. Since it’s a pickup, Chevrolet has made sure to emphasize functionality as much as form. It has the same luxurious interior as the previous version, with some cool new technology, like Apple CarPlay® and, soon, Android Auto™ integration, which are operated through the up-level 7- and 8-inch MyLink touch screens. These have the same classy look as the previous version but the internal hardware has been updated to respond to commands more quickly.

One of the coolest new exterior features is the cab running boards that can be extended toward the cargo bed with a simple tap of the foot, a feature no other competitor offers. Steering wheel controls let you answer phone calls, control the MyLink display and the driver information center settings and other safety features. It also offers a rear-vision camera for better visibility and four-wheel disc brakes with DuraLife rotors. The Silverado is available with 4G LTE Wi-Fi and wireless charging, as well as USB ports to keep you connected while you’re on the road.

Design

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado is the epitome of rugged truck design. It showcases a muscular front end with a sculpted hood and brighter, longer-lasting LED accent lights for a bold new look. The inlaid doors are triple-sealed for extra sound muffling, and the tuned exhaust system reduces noise inside the truck cabin.

The cargo bed is made from high-strength roll-formed steel with standard bed rail protectors and an optional spray-in bed liner for hauling heavy loads. There are LED under-rail box lights to help you see into the bed at night and movable tie-downs to better secure your cargo. It’s easy to get in and out of the truck bed with the corner step rear bumper and pocket grips.

Inside, you’ll find a classic, elegant design with everything you need at your fingertips and enough room to stretch out. The cabin features dual-resilient foam seats with vinyl covering and 40-20-40 split bench front seats for extra comfort. There are power door locks and a clock, tachometer and trip computer to track your miles.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado includes six standard air bags, a high-strength steel safety cage, four-wheel ABS, front and rear ventilated disc brakes and traction control. The truck also offers optional forward collision alert, lane keep assist, IntelliBeam high-beam assist and safety alert driver’s seat. OnStar® automatic crash response is standard for six months if the truck is equipped with the OnStar basic plan.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado is a dependable, long-lasting full-size pickup that won’t fail to impress you with its expert handling and bold, sleek design. It’s a truck that is easy to embrace, and the elegant interior and modern technology in the 2016 version seal the deal in making it one of today’s top pickup trucks.
