2016 Chevrolet Camaro Wins Motor Trend’s ‘Car of the Year’

2016-Chevrolet-Camaro-Red

We love Chevies here at JN Chevrolet, although that should come as no surprise to anyone. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, however, has recently won “Car of the Year” from Motor Trend, beating out high-performance challengers like the Audi TT, the Mercedes-Benz AMG® GT S, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata, as well as vehicles on the cutting edge of tech, such as the Toyota Mirai and BMW 7 Series. Despite the competition, the 2016 Camaro came out on top. Here’s why.

The 2016 Chevrolet Volt: Eco-friendly and Fun to Drive

2016-Chevrolet-Volt-Blue-Outside

When you see the 2016 Chevrolet Volt, you may think that it’s simply another hybrid vehicle like the Toyota Prius or Nissan Leaf—but the Volt is much more than that. Back in 2010, the Chevy Volt was the first plug-in series hybrid. Your average hybrid vehicle uses an electric engine to supplement its internal combustion engine, while the Volt is essentially an electric vehicle (EV) that uses its combustion engine to charge the electric battery.

What to Keep in Mind Bringing Your Dog to the Beach

Dog-On-The-Beach

One of the greatest parts of living on an island is the vast amount of beaches you have access to a daily basis. And if you’re a dog-lover, it’s only natural that you’ll want to take your canine buddy to join in on your fun. But the beach can hold some hazards for our four-legged friends. That’s why we here at JN Chevrolet have put together this list of things to keep in mind when bringing your dog to the beach.

Dogs can get sunburned

Just like you can, your dog can get sunburned. Roughly half an hour before you plan on spending time out in the sun, apply a zinc-free sunblock to your dog’s nose and ears to help protect them.

Running on the beach is hard

There’s a reason they make people do it in the military. Running on sand, especially wet sand, is a great form of exercise, but it can tire your dog out much more than you might expect. And when Rover gets tired, he’s going to want to drink something…

Sea water is bad for dogs

It’s bad for people, and it’s just as bad for dogs. Make sure to bring water along for your dog to drink, because without it, she might think those waves look awfully tasty. Ingesting sea water can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, so keep that in mind.

Keep track of your dog’s paws

It’s nice to lay out on the sand, but it can hurt your dog’s paws if you’re not careful. Besides it simply being too hot, sand can also hide sharp lava rocks, fish hooks, broken glass, and other things you wouldn’t be happy about finding in your own feet. Make sure they don’t wind up in your dog’s either.

We hope this list proves helpful to you and your dog, and that you both enjoy yourselves the next time you hit the beach. Before you go, though, be sure to stop by our service department so we can make sure your car has a great time too. (You don’t want it to be left out of the fun, do you?)

What You Need to Know About Child Safety Seats

Baby boy in car seat

The leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries to US children are road injuries. Luckily, car seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71%, but only if they’re used correctly–there’s a lot more to it than just making sure they fit in your back seat. Read on to learn how to find the right car seat for your child and how to use it properly.

Three Kinds of Car Seats

 • Rear-Facing Car Seat
 • Forward-Facing Car Seat
 • Booster Seat

Rear-Facing Car Seat

Rear-facing seats have harnesses to secure your child, and are designed to protect babies in case of a crash. They’re specifically constructed to protect an infant’s delicate neck and spine. Some rear-facing seats are specially made for newborns and small infants, but children tend to outgrow these seats by eight or nine months. At that point, you should find a larger, rear-facing seat that will fit your child comfortably.

Children should remain in rear-facing seats until around the age of 2, and sometimes longer depending on their height and weight.

Forward-Facing Car Seat

In a forward-facing seat, children are elevated and secured with a harness. Although your children can graduate from this sort of restraint system to a booster seat when they’re as young as four, (depending on their weight and height), it’s recommended that you keep them in a car seat until at least age seven.

As with all car seats, be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommended height and weight to see what’s safest for your child.

Booster Seat

A booster seat (depending on whether it has back or neck support) is primarily designed to lift a child up so that their seat belt fits correctly. Booster seats that have back and neck support are especially useful if the backseat of your car doesn’t have headrests.

Other Helpful Information

 • Children, regardless of whether they’re in a car seat, are safest in the back seat. Don’t let them sit up front until they’re at least 13 years old.
 • Once you’ve installed your car seat, try to move it around. If it slides more than an inch in any direction, you need to adjust it.
 • If your child is buckled into their seat, make sure their harness is taut across their chest, but not tight. A good rule of thumb is to try and pinch the strap at your child’s shoulder. You should not be able to pinch any excess webbing.

Interested in seeing if your car seat will fit in one of our vehicles? Be sure to stop by JN Chevrolet today and find out in person. Because choosing the right car seat is only part of keeping your kids safe as you drive. Choosing the right car is just as important.

3 National Parks to Visit This Summer

Great-Smoky-Mountains-National-Park

As a Chevy driver, you know there’s nothing better than hitting the open road with some gear in your trunk, a tent on your roof, and a thirst for adventure in your soul. To satisfy that wanderlust, we suggest visiting some of the national parks on this list. (And if none of these strike your fancy, keep in mind that there are nearly 60 national parks in the US. You’re bound to find one that you like eventually.)

1) Capital Reef National Park

Located in Utah’s Waterpocket Fold, a geological “wrinkle” in the earth, Capital Reef National Park is a beautiful place for scenic drives among bluffs, cliffs, canyons and domes. The park and campgrounds are open all year round, though the Ripple Nature Center and the Gifford House Store and Museum are not. (Ripple Nature Center is only open on limited days from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Gifford House is open from March 14 through Halloween.)

2) Petrified Forest National Park

Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park is full of surprises. Although the name probably gives it away, those colorful pillars of rock you see by the road aren’t rocks: they’re petrified trees. Mostly made of silica, traces amounts of copper, cobalt, and chromium can turn the former trees greenish-blues while manganese makes them look pink. Be sure to stop and see the petrified trees for yourself, and while you do, keep an eye out for fossils and petroglyphs.

3) Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park stretches between North Carolina and Tennessee. You’re in store for a nice quiet drive if you go from Cove Creek Road (just off of I-40) in North Carolina and head through the Cataloochee Valley up to Tennessee 32. The way takes you past historic communities, campgrounds, and even a trout fishing creek. If you’re not in the mood for fishing, the park also has plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing, as it’s home to black bears, elk, turkeys, raccoons, and more.

And there you have them, drivers: three of America’s best national parks. If you have suggestions for what parks other drivers should visit, be sure to let us know in the comment box below. To learn more about how JN Chevrolet can help you with your adventures, be sure to stop by the dealership today.
